Why Do Dogs Wag Their Tails?

If you’ve been searching for the meaning of your dog’s tail wagging, look no further. In this article, we’ll break down the reasons why your pup wiggles, and what their body language says about their mood.
PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF TAIL WAGGING
Did you know that the direction in which your dog wags their tail expresses a unique meaning?
Dogs don’t begin wagging until about one month after birth, developing as a response to instinct. Evidence suggests that this is a result of evolutionary rewards as well. Since it inspires such a positive response from humans, dogs have likely evolved to wag their tails more.
When a puppy wags their tail, they may be trying to signal playtime boundaries to littermates or express hunger to their mother.
Dogs show “side biases” depending on their mood or stimuli. Positive stimuli activate right-side bias wagging, and negative stimuli activate left-side bias wagging. Wagging has even shown a correlation with heart rate and arousal.
MESSAGES COMMUNICATED VIA TAIL WAGGING
Wagging is a primary mode of communication for dogs, as they can readily discern the nuances of wagging styles in each other. For instance, “tail wagging with low carriage is often used as a visual sign of appeasement, submission or non-aggressive intent” among dogs. They also use wagging to “request” food from humans.
Evidence suggests that in some cases, dogs wag their tails primarily to win our favor. As mentioned before, wagging tails may be an evolutionary advantage. “Scientists know that humans’ brains respond positively to rhythm,” and because of the rhythmic nature of wagging, over time “humans consciously or unconsciously preferred dogs that wag more.” Perhaps owner approval is the stimulus in many wagging situations.
Overall, studies suggest that the most reliable meaning ascribed to wagging returns to the left-or-right wag clues. One study 2013 Current Biology study listed the following characteristics to each side wag:
Left-side wag:
- Higher levels of stress/anxiety signals
- Higher levels of alerting/targeting signals
Right-side wag:
- Higher levels of relaxed/neutral signals
