Urinary Tract Health for Dogs

Urinary Tract Infections

Does your dog suffer from UTIs? If they do, they’re not alone! Just like humans, our canine companions can suffer from Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)—a common yet uncomfortable condition. A dog's urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. (1). It has important functions that keep our dogs happy and healthy.

One of its main functions is to filter the blood and flush out the harmful toxins whilst keeping hold of the ‘important stuff’ like potassium and sodium. Urine is a byproduct of this essential process. However, the urinary tract can be a problem area for dogs and cause some uncomfortable infections.

The importance of clean water

Hydration plays a huge part in urinary tract health. However, it’s not as simple as just giving your pet water; it’s important to ensure that the water your dog drinks is clean! Water flushes toxins out and encourages a healthy urinary tract and functioning kidney. The more your pup drinks, the more they will flush out the bacteria which will prevent infection or stop it from worsening. Dehydration increases risk of UTIs so keep topping up your dog’s water bowl with fresh, clean water.
