Spring Lawn Care for Dog Owners!

As we eagerly anticipate the springtime, we are getting closer to gardening season! For those who know their hydrangeas from their hyacinths or those who want to enjoy leisurely days in their garden over BBQ season; we have compiled some top tips for fellow dog owners who want to maintain their garden and look after their pooches over the warmer months.

1.        Dealing with Dog Waste Immediately

Although it isn’t the most pleasant of jobs its important to tackle the issue of dog waste as soon as possible. Beyond aesthetic reasons, dog waste contains harmful substances that can cause damage to lawns. This can ultimately kill the grass and cause a whole host of issues.

2.        Choosing the Right Grass Type

Selecting the right grass type is a good way to maintain a healthy lawn. We all know that dogs absolutely love some rough and tumble outside but what some may not know is different grass types can with stand different levels of wear and tear. Perennial ryegrass is known for its durability and would be a great choice for dog owners, it also conveniently has quick growth [1].

 

3.        Avoid Chemical Treatments 

Lots of gardening products contain chemicals hat can be harmful for pets. It would be wise to keep an eye out for chemical free products to keep your lawn AND pet healthy over the summer period.

 

4.        Look out for Toxic Weeds and Plants

Some beautiful plants and flowers can be not so beautiful for our pets. Lots of plants are toxic to dogs, unbeknownst to their owners. Take care to make sure that the plants in your garden are safe for your pets. Some toxic plants to look out for are: English Ivy, Yew, Dogbane and Oleander [2].

5.        Mow Your Lawn Regularly

Another top tip is to regularly mow your lawn to keep your lawn free from fleas and ticks! Ticks like to burrow in long overgrown grass and from there make their way onto our pets and into our homes. Keeping up with mowing your lawn can mitigate this risk.

 

6.        Use Dog Rocks

Finally, use dog rocks to stop your dog’s urine from creating unsightly yellow burn marks on your lawn. Dog rocks are a super and easy solution to a universal pet problem. Simply place the rocks in your dog’s water bowl and start to see your lawn spring back to life within 3-5 weeks!
